From our Spiritual Leader: Angela Denton

March 23, 2015 by admin

Angela Denton 500x500A year ago when I was doing research on the benefits of belonging to a healthy community I came across a powerful poem written by earth activist and author Starhawk that eloquently speaks to the beauty and power of a spiritually conscious community.

We are all longing to go home to some place we have never been – a place half-remembered and half-envisioned we can only catch glimpses of from time to time. Community. Somewhere, there are people to whom we can speak with passion without having the words catch in our throats. Somewhere a circle of hands will open to receive us, eyes will light up as we enter, voices will celebrate with us whenever we come into our own power. Community means strength that joins our strength to do the work that needs to be done. Arms to hold us when we falter. A circle of healing. A circle of friends. Someplace where we can be free.

Deeply held within the heart and soul of each of us is the desire to belong. According to Dr. Kenneth Pelletier of the Stanford Center for Research and Disease Prevention the sense of belonging inherent in all individuals is a basic human need- as basic as food and shelter. His research has shown that those who receive social support are healthier, happier, and are more active and productive than those who live in isolation without meaningful and loving connection and support.

The type of community depicted in Starhawk’s poem does not happen by chance. It requires the united effort of all members. Each individual is invited to become fully aware of the energy he/she is contributing to not only his/her experience but simultaneously contributing to the collective. Members willingly commit to conscious participation and shared responsibility. In his book Healthy Congregations, Peter Steinke reminds us that congregations are living systems that parallel the systems of the human body. The physical body is holistic in nature in that what happens in one cell, one organ, etc. affects the health and functioning of all the other cells, organs and the overall health of the entire body. Similarly, a church is a collective whole and the overall health of the community is affected by the behaviors, actions, and emotions of its membership, ministry teams, lay leaders, and the minister/spiritual leader. Steinke brilliantly gives a prescription for healthy congregations. According to Steinke healthy communities:

• Have a sense purpose where members are actively united around a shared vision, mission, and core values.
• Stimulate and provide diverse opportunities for spiritual growth
• Provide opportunities for members to identify their strengths and share their spiritual gifts
• Have clear identified roles and boundaries
• Appraise and manage conflict effectively and have an understanding that conflict is a sign of new growth wanting to emerge.

As I embark on my new role as spiritual leader of UBTS, I devote myself completely to modeling spiritually conscious commitment. I vow to educate our community on Unity’s rich Truth teachings and on the dynamics of how to embody spiritually conscious engagement. I not only want to share Starhawk’s poem to inspire you, but I want to realize it with you here at UBTS.

Love and light,
Angela Denton

Wishing you Joy in 2015!

March 23, 2015 by admin

Dear Friends,

As I write this we are about to begin a New Year, entering “January”. The word come from an old Greek God by the name of Janus. Janus has two faces on the same head; one looks at the past and one looks at the future. Many times we have that Janus nature inside of us. We have difficulty moving ahead because we are stuck in the past. To truly experience the blessings of Spirit, we must realize that we are not locked into the limitations of yesterday. While the Past is nothing to hide or run from, it is still the Past. However, the moment we live in is the PRESENT. Will we let this day be sufficient “unto itself”? If so, then there is a need to let go of our Past, otherwise we simply continue to repeat it in the Present.

For this moment to be new, we must fully live in this moment. To fully live in this moment, this moment must be all there is. It cannot be determined by what came before. This means what we can experience Now is not bound in any way by what we have experienced before.

Joy is living in this very moment and that is my wish for each one of you here at Unity by the Shore.

A Very Blessed “Now”!
Rev. Joanne

Christmas 2014

March 23, 2014 by admin

Dear Friends…

As we move through the Christmas season, we celebrate life. Charles Fillmore, co-founder of the Unity movement, taught life as one of the powers with which we are born. The power of life is the ability to energize, vitalize and enliven. Christmas time is a wonderful opportunity to be in the question of what am I giving life to?

As Christians we are called to give life to the Spirit of Christ within. You might be wondering just what that means! We are told in Philippians 2:5, “Keep this mind in you which was also in Christ Jesus.” 1 Corinthians 2:16 tells us, “But we have the mind of Christ.” What does it mean to have the mind of Christ?

Jesus fully understood that he and the Father were one. In that space of being One, there was no need for an intermediary to God. He knew he had direct access to God by turning within and being still. He gave life to the Spirit of Christ by becoming Christ in expression.

To become Christ in expression means to become the highest expression of You! Do not shrink back from the task of experiencing your unique Spirit of Christ. Remember Jesus told us, “You are the Light of the World!”

May you have a blessed Christmas!

The Year of “I AM”

March 23, 2014 by admin

Dear Friends,

We here at Unity by the Shore are continuing to raise our consciousness, knowing and believing that nothing is impossible!

Every Sunday, I see the Christ in you as you greet one another with such love. And, you are supportive, helping someone who may be in the mist of challenges, assuring them that with God within them… “All IS well.”

Yet, the world is full of uncertainty, and many things seem to be beyond our control. But with every step we here in this Spiritual Community take, God, within, is empowering us to take that step! And we are! 2014 is “the Year of “I AM”. The words “I AM” ARE A HOLY EXPRESSION FOR THE NAME OF GOD – THE HIGHEST ASPECT OF YOURSELF. This year, we explore the highest possibility for our lives by choosing a quality to focus on and express. “I AM” Boundless …. Real …. Courageous ….. Aware …. Adventurous…. Lighthearted….. Outrageous….. Visionary…. Limitless…. Connected….. and Sacred..

So know, dear friends, in every moment, that YOU ARE THE LIVING EXPRESSION OF THE CHRIST.!  And, NOTHING SHALL BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR YOU!

The question is: do you believe that?  If not, stick around!

Love, Joy & Peace!

Continued “Resurrection”

March 23, 2014 by admin

Dear Friends!

Wow! Time flies when you’re having fun! The last time we shared with you it was a message on “Resurrection”.

Let us continue with “Resurrection” as we lift ourselves up in abundance! Jesus said “I am come that they may have life and have it abundantly.” By this he meant that we should not settle for a limited understanding of a rich and full life, for “with God, all things are possible.”

Abundance and prosperity don’t come to you. They come THROUGH you. Because thought is creative, your consciousness creates your life experiences. Do you believe that? I do, and with all my heart, soul and mind. For Divine Principles, the law of cause and effect, operate the way they do because everything in the Universe is Energy and It is all Love! All you need to do is to trust that God; Spirit is within you and always guiding you to your highest Good.

But, you need to “walk” through that “door. Patience, Perseverance and Spirit will guide you moment by moment!

May Your Know Love, Joy and Peace
Rev. Joanne
