January 19th – February 2nd

Our congregation will be divided into 2 teams.  Team one will be all those who celebrate a birthday during the months of January through June.  Team two will consist of individuals who celebrate a birthday during the months of July through December.  Members of each team are invited to bring in non-perishable food items that will be given to support Calico Cat Pantry and Cupboard in Middletown, NJ who is in need of food to support those who can use a hand up.  The team that collects the most food will be pronounced the winner and be given bragging rights.

Please note we will still be doing our monthly collection to support Lunch Break.  We know we live in an abundant Universe and affirm that we are capable of spreading our love by giving in new and creative ways to many within our surrounding area.

February 26, 2020 – Ash Wednesday Ceremony

Ash Wednesday Ceremony
Fasting and Feasting
February 26, 2020
6:00 pm

February 26, 2020, Ash Wednesday, marks the beginning of the Lenten season which is observed by many Christian Faiths worldwide.  During the season of Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter Sunday, many Christians focus on simple living, prayer, and fasting in order to grow closer to God.

New Thought Communities like Unity invite individuals of all faith traditions into the devotional practice of “fasting and feasting”.   Fasting is committing to the practice of relinquishing thoughts, beliefs, words, and behaviors that stand in the way of living more peacefully, authentically, and with meaning and purpose.    Feasting, on the other hand, is the daily practice of engaging in thinking and ways of being that foster peace, gratitude, appreciation, compassion, personal growth and transformation, and being of service to others.

By consciously engaging our Spiritual Powers of Elimination and Life, we have an opportunity on a daily basis not only during Lent to let go of, fast from, limiting ways of being and to animate, feast on, thoughts, words, and actions that enhance our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being

Please join me in a reflective prayer ceremony where you will have an opportunity to cleanse your consciousness, affirm Truth, and select a Spiritual Power to consciously embody for the next 40 days.  Sacred palm ash will be distributed as a symbol of dying to the old and being reborn to new life.

Love and light,
Rev. Angela Denton

Ways to Help Save Our Planet

January 10, 2020 by admin

by Ingrid Justick:

Vol. 26, No. 1

Global warming is probably the greatest threat our earth has to face. Each of us can have a positive impact on the production of greenhouse gasses. And if we act together in the following minor ways, the cumulative effect will be dramatic. So much of the way we live our lives is wasteful or thoughtless. It takes nothing to switch off a lamp, unplug a phone charger, take a shorter shower, skip the pre-wash cycle on the dishwasher, walk instead of drive. Some suggestions that follow involve a little more effort: recycling, fixing leaky faucets and toilets, buying a fuel-efficient car, insulating your home, purchasing only appliance and electronics with the Energy Star certification.

Energy Star certified appliances and electronics: An Energy Star qualified washing machine uses 50% less energy and could reduce your utility bill by $110 annually. Wash your clothes in cold water with organic enzyme-based cleaning products, which do not pollute our groundwater.

Paint: Most paint is made from petrochemicals and its manufacturing process creates 10 times its own weight in toxic waste. It also releases volatile organic components (VOCs) that threaten our health. Best alternatives: natural paints made from plant oils and almost 100% degradable.

Food: Food is traveling farther than ever. The average American meal contains ingredients produced in five different countries. To reduce CO2 emissions from trucks, airplanes and cargo ships, purchase foods that are in season, organic and grown locally. Buy eggs in cardboard cartons; they are manufactured from recycled paper and are again recyclable. Styrofoam or plastic cartons are not biodegradable and their manufacturing produces harmful toxins.

Save water: Fix leaky faucets and toilets. A steady faucet drip can waste 20 gallons of water per day. A leaky toilet wastes up to 100 gallons per day. By leaving the water running while you brush your teeth you waste 150 gallons of water per month. Turn your thermostat down 1 degree and your heating costs will decrease by 3 %.

Avoid disposable goods. In our country alone, we throw away 2.5 billion polystyrene cups every year, which wind up in landfills. Buy recycled or used products and you will save virgin materials, conserve energy and reduce landfill waste.

Avoid pesticides. Use natural methods of pest control. Use organic fertilizers. You can save 6 gallons of water every minute of watering by attaching a trigger nozzle to your garden hose, so that you use water only where it is needed.

Recycle your newspaper. There are 63 million newspapers printed each day in the U.S.  Of these, 44 million, or 63%, will be thrown away. Recycling just the Sunday paper would save more than half a million trees each week.

Buy a hybrid car. These cars drive 50 miles per gallon; a typical S.U.V. travels only 15 MPG.

The continued rise in carbon emissions is a matter of individual concern, each of us can and should do something, however small, to protect our Earth.

February 2020 – Celebrating Black History

January 9, 2020 by admin

During the Month of February, Sunday services will reflect some of the teachings and wisdom of Rev. Johnnie Colmon, a powerful and inspiring black leader of the New Thought Movement.

On February 23, 2020, we will have our Soul Food Sunday Celebration and we invite you to bring in a dish to share  that represents your cultural heritage.

Several individuals will be sharing poems and writings written by black artists that have inspired them in their lives.

Paula Philips will be adorning our fellowship area and sanctuary with her mother’s, Mary Philips, paintings.  Each precious work of art will be tagged with a suggested love offering price with all proceeds going to UBTS. It is Paula’s desire to have her mother’s legacy of beauty and creativity spread throughout our community that Mary adored and cherished.
